Mardaani Bai

This is written as a part of I am Mardaani activity exclusively at BlogAdda.com for Indian Bloggers.

There was Mardaani working in many houses serving people by sweeping, mobbing, washing utensils and clothes. She was a hard worker we called her “Bai”. She was working hard and hard for money to fulfill her family’s basic needs. She said God has Given Stomach so we have to struggle to feed it.
People used to give Bai their old clothes and left over food she was really happy with whatever she got, she was very loyal servant. But she always had some beaten marks on her body. I used to ask her what happened bai, she said I fell down on stairs. Then I gave her some medicine. After few weeks again she said,” I had an accident can you give same medicine. “I gave her and asked her to be careful and take some rest.
After one month she was pregnant, she started asking me if we have some leftover food, I gave her and daily I started giving her breakfast as she started asking me for food daily. It was strange for me she worked in so many houses so I thought why she cannot afford enough food.
One day she was feeling very week and I asked her about what happened. She started crying and said “My husband beats me after drinking, he take all my money to buy drinks and the hits me and my kid without any reason, I don’t know what to do, he was a good person before but now after losing job he just drinks and beat me for anything wrong”. I was so shocked and tears rolled on my cheeks.
At that time I was speechless, what should I tell her, what can I do for her and how can I help her I could not understand. But if she is not ready to stand up for herself then no one can help her about.  She was tolerating all those things as he was her husband, but she has to understand he has no right to treat her like this. Every action has equal and opposite reaction and now it was her time to react.
Days passed by and our routine was the same. One day she came and said “Now on-words don not give me breakfast madam, I am feeling good now, I fixed my husband. Last night he came asking me for money which I had saved for my son’s school fees, I was so angry, I hit him and called police and they taught him real good lesson. He is out of my home and life now. I will take care of my kids even I had to work more.”
For me she was real Mardaani she fought for herself, her kid and all those women who tolerate their husband when they have option to fight for their self-respect. I salute to the “Mardaani Bai”.
